Northanger Abbey

by Jane Austen

About 5 h 10 min of reading31 chapters

Catherine Morland, seventeen and raised on Gothic novels, leaves her country parsonage for a season in Bath. There she falls in with the pushy Thorpes, is courted by the clever Henry Tilney, and is invited to the Tilney family's abbey, where she half expects locked chests and a murdered wife and finds instead a different kind of unpleasantness in General Tilney's temper. Jane Austen wrote the novel in the late 1790s, sold it to a publisher who never printed it, and bought it back; it appeared only after her death, in 1817, alongside Persuasion. It is her lightest book and the one most openly about reading, poking fun at Ann Radcliffe while taking Catherine's feelings seriously.
