Mansfield Park

by Jane Austen

About 10 h 40 min of reading48 chapters

Mansfield Park, published in 1814, follows Fanny Price, a poor niece taken in at the age of ten by her rich relations the Bertrams, as she grows up quiet, overlooked and in love with her cousin Edmund. The arrival of the worldly Henry and Mary Crawford from London, and the amateur theatricals the young people get up while Sir Thomas is away in Antigua, set the household on a course that ends in scandal. It is Jane Austen's most serious novel and the one readers argue about most, since its heroine is shy and principled rather than witty and its villains are the most attractive people in the book. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
