The Letters of Jane Austen
Selected from the compilation of her great nephew, Edward, Lord Bradbourne
The Letters of Jane Austen is Sarah Chauncey Woolsey's selection, first published in 1892, from the correspondence that Austen's great-nephew Lord Brabourne had printed in full in 1884. Nearly all are to her sister Cassandra, written between 1796 and 1816 when one of them was away from home, and they report balls, bonnets, visits, servants, the weather, the prices of muslin, the progress of the novels and the small comedies of Steventon, Bath and Chawton with the eye and irony of the fiction. Woolsey, who wrote children's books as Susan Coolidge, contributes a preface on Austen's life and the revival of interest in her, and the volume gives a direct view of the novelist among her family.
