Love and Freindship [sic]

by Jane Austen

About 2 h 13 min of reading42 chapters

Jane Austen wrote these pieces as a teenager, between about 1790 and 1793, for the amusement of her family, and they were not published until 1922. The title story is a novel in letters in which the heroine Laura recounts a life of elopements, faintings and improbable coincidences, parodying the sentimental fiction of the day with complete seriousness of tone. The volume also contains Lesley Castle, an unfinished epistolary novel; The History of England, "by a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant Historian" who adores Mary Queen of Scots; A Collection of Letters; and several short scraps including the first act of a comedy. The spelling of the title is Austen's own. Readers of the mature novels will recognize the voice already fully formed. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
