Eloisa is the English version of Rousseau's Julie, ou la Nouvelle Héloïse, the novel in letters that made him famous across Europe after its appearance in 1761. Julie d'Étange, daughter of a Swiss baron, falls in love with her tutor Saint-Preux; her father forbids the match, and she is married instead to the older and rational Wolmar. The second half of the novel follows what happens when the former lover is invited back into the household at Clarens as a friend. Rousseau uses the correspondence to argue about passion and duty, virtue, religion, domestic economy and the Alpine landscape, and the book shaped the sentimental fiction of the next half century. This edition presents William Kenrick's eighteenth-century translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
