Emily Brontë (1818–1848) was an English novelist and poet, the fifth of six children of the perpetual curate of Haworth, Yorkshire, where she spent almost her whole life. She was educated mainly at home, worked six months as a teacher and studied for a year in Brussels with her sister Charlotte; otherwise she kept house, walked the moors with her dog and wrote. Her poems appeared with her sisters' in 1846 under the name Ellis Bell; her only novel, Wuthering Heights, followed in 1847 and baffled its first readers with its violence. She died of tuberculosis at thirty, having refused to see a doctor until the morning of her death.
