Wood Magic: A Fable
Wood Magic: A Fable, published in 1881, is the first of Richard Jefferies's two books about the boy Bevis, the imaginative child of a Wiltshire farmhouse a self-portrait. In this one the animals, birds and even the brook and the wind talk to him, and he is drawn into the politics of the countryside: the tyranny of Kapchack the magpie, king of the birds and beasts, the plotting of the weasel, fox and rat, the war with Choo Hoo, emperor of the wood-pigeons, and the fall of the old king. Jefferies's close observation of hedgerow and field gives the fable its texture, and the closing chapter, in which the wind speaks to Bevis, is its most famous passage.
