Richard Jefferies (1848–1887) was an English nature writer and novelist, born at Coate Farm near Swindon, the countryside that fills all his books. A provincial journalist, he reached a wider public with letters to the Times on the Wiltshire laborer and with The Gamekeeper at Home in 1878, and in the ten years left to him wrote Wild Life in a Southern County, Round About a Great Estate, the children's books Wood Magic and Bevis, the spiritual autobiography The Story of My Heart and After London, a vision of England returned to wilderness. He died of tuberculosis at thirty-eight.
