Witch-Doctors, published in 1922, is a novel by Charles Beadle set in German East Africa before the First World War. At Ingonya, a small military station on the southeastern shore of Lake Victoria, the German commandant von Schnitzler rules over his askaris and sergeants, and the professor Gerald Birnier pursues his own ends, haunted by the photograph of a woman named Lucille. Beyond the station, in the kingdom of the god-king and rainmaker Kawa Kendi, rival witch-doctors scheme over the succession, a deposed priest works as a spy, and the heir Zalu Zako and the chief Myalu both love Bakuma. Beadle, who had traveled in Africa, sets European and African intrigues against each other in a story of power and belief.
