Walking

by Henry David Thoreau

About 49 min of reading1 chapters

Walking is the essay Henry David Thoreau developed from lectures of the 1850s and prepared for the Atlantic Monthly before his death in 1862. It is his fullest statement of the meaning of wildness. He begins with the art of sauntering, which he traces to pilgrims going to the Holy Land, defends the four hours a day he spends in the woods and fields against the claims of shop and study, observes that his own steps tend always westward, like those of the nation, and declares that in wildness is the preservation of the world. He praises swamps over gardens and wild thought over tame learning, and ends with a sunset over a Concord meadow. It is a founding text of American environmental writing. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
