Cape Cod
Cape Cod, published in 1865, three years after Henry David Thoreau's death, grew out of the walks he made along the outer shore of Cape Cod in 1849 and on later visits. It opens with the aftermath of a shipwreck at Cohasset, where bodies of Irish immigrants lie on the shore, and then follows Thoreau on foot along the great beach from Eastham to Provincetown, past the plains of Nauset, the Highland Light and the dunes. He meets an old Wellfleet oysterman, reads the history of the Pilgrims and early settlers, and keeps returning to the sea itself, wild and indifferent. The book is dry-humored, observant and darker than Walden, a portrait of a place at the edge of the continent.
