This is the second volume of Henry David Thoreau's journal in the twenty-volume edition of his writings published in 1906 under the editorship of Bradford Torrey, and covers 1850 to the middle of September 1851, when Thoreau was in his early thirties and had been back from Walden Pond for three years. The entries record his daily walks around Concord in every season and weather, the plants, birds and water of the river meadows, encounters with farmers and Indians, reading in Hindu scripture and the Greek poets, and reflections on friendship, solitude and the vocation of the writer. After 1850 the journal became Thoreau's principal work, and these months show the practice taking its mature form.
