The Maine Woods

by Henry David Thoreau

The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, Volume 03 (of 20)

About 7 h 03 min of reading12 chapters

The Maine Woods gathers Henry David Thoreau's accounts of three journeys into the northern wilderness, published in 1864, two years after his death, and edited by his friend William Ellery Channing. "Ktaadn" describes his 1846 climb toward the summit of Mount Katahdin, where the bare, unhandselled rock shook his sense of nature as a home for man. "Chesuncook" follows a moose hunt that troubles his conscience, and "The Allegash and East Branch" records a long canoe trip guided by the Penobscot Joe Polis, whose skill and knowledge Thoreau studies closely. Appendices list trees, plants, birds, an outfit for an excursion and Indian words. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
