About 9 h 21 min of reading43 chapters

Familiar Letters is the sixth volume of the 1906 edition of The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, edited by his friend and first biographer F. B. Sanborn. Sanborn arranges the letters in three periods, the years of discipline, the golden age of achievement, and friends and followers, and links them with his own commentary. Thoreau writes to his family, to Emerson and his household, to the Concord circle, and above all to H. G. O. Blake and other admirers who sought his advice, discussing nature, books, work, solitude and principle. The letters show the same humor, severity and close observation as Walden, in a more personal key. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
