A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers
A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, published in 1849, was Henry David Thoreau's first book. It recalls the trip he made in 1839 with his brother John, rowing and sailing a homemade boat down the Concord River and up the Merrimack into New Hampshire, and is arranged as seven chapters from Saturday to Friday. The voyage is the frame for long digressions on friendship, religion, poetry, history, the fish of the river and the Native peoples who once lived on its banks, with poems and quotations woven in. John had died in 1842, and the book is in part a memorial to him. It sold so poorly that Thoreau joked about the unsold copies filling his library. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
