About 7 h 43 min of reading20 chapters

Walden, published in 1854, is Henry David Thoreau's account of the two years he spent in a cabin he built on the shore of Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts, compressed into the cycle of a single year. He explains his economy down to the cent, describes the pond in every season, the loons, the ice cutters and the ants at war, and argues throughout that most people spend their lives earning things they do not need. Bound with it here is On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, the essay of 1849 in which Thoreau defends his refusal to pay a poll tax to a government that upheld slavery and waged war on Mexico; Gandhi and Martin Luther King both acted on it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
