This is the first volume of Henry David Thoreau's Journal as printed in 1906 in the twenty-volume Writings, edited by Bradford Torrey, and it gathers what survives of the record he began in October 1837, after leaving Harvard, down to 1847. The early years exist only in the extracts Thoreau himself copied out under the heading Gleanings, or What Time Has Not Reaped of My Journal, but they already show his habits of mind, his reading, his walks around Concord and his first attempts at the sentences that would go into A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. The volume ends with the notebooks kept at Walden Pond in 1845 and 1846, the raw material of Walden.
