Vegetable Teratology

by Maxwell T. Masters

An Account of the Principal Deviations from the Usual Construction of Plants

About 9 h 46 min of reading82 chapters

Vegetable Teratology, published in 1869 for the Ray Society, is Maxwell T. Masters's systematic account of malformations in plants: flowers that fuse or split, leaves that appear where petals should be, double blossoms, spiral stems, buds growing out of flowers and other departures from the usual plan. Masters classifies them under the headings of union, separation, displacement, altered number, size and form, and for each type gives recorded instances with their botanical names and sources. His argument, following Goethe and the morphologists, is that such monstrosities are not freaks but clues to the laws by which normal organs are built. The book remained the standard reference in its field for decades. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
