The Natural History of Pliny, Volume 5 (of 6)

by Pliny the Elder

Translated by John Bostock and Henry T. RileyAbout 14 h 31 min of reading672 chapters

This fifth volume of the Bostock and Riley translation of Pliny's Natural History, published in 1856, contains Books XXIV to XXXI, the heart of Pliny's pharmacopoeia. It begins with the remedies derived from forest trees and the wild plants, continues with cures arranged by disease, and then devotes four books to remedies drawn from living creatures, human and animal, before turning to the medicinal uses of water, salt and other aquatic products. Pliny records what Greek physicians, Roman farmers and the Magi claimed, often with open skepticism about the last, and the result is an unmatched record of ancient medicine, folklore and superstition. The translators' notes identify the plants where possible and compare Pliny's statements with those of Dioscorides and Galen. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
