by Pliny the Elder

Translated by John Bostock and Henry T. RileyAbout 15 h 34 min of reading453 chapters

The Natural History of Pliny the Elder, completed in AD 77, is a thirty-seven book encyclopedia of the physical world as the Romans knew it. This third volume of the Bostock and Riley translation, published in 1855, contains Books XI to XVII: the insects, with long sections on bees and their government, and the comparative anatomy of animals; trees, beginning with the exotic trees of India, Arabia and Egypt and the perfumes and unguents made from them; the vine and wine; the olive and the fruit trees; the forest trees; and the cultivation and grafting of trees. Pliny mixes observation, hearsay and moral comment, and the translators' notes say where he is right and where he repeats a traveler's tale. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
