The Natural History of Pliny, Volume 2 (of 6)

by Pliny the Elder

Translated by John Bostock and Henry T. RileyAbout 17 h 06 min of reading376 chapters

Pliny the Elder's Natural History, completed in AD 77, is an encyclopedia of everything the Roman world knew or believed about the natural world, compiled, by his own count, from two thousand volumes. This second volume of the translation by John Bostock and H. T. Riley contains Books VI through X. Book VI completes the geography of the known world, from the Black Sea through Scythia, India, Arabia and Ethiopia; Book VII treats man, his births, his longevity and his inventions; Books VIII, IX and X describe land animals, fishes and birds, from elephants and lions to pearls, dolphins and the phoenix. Pliny mixes sober observation with marvels, and the translators' notes sort one from the other. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
