The Natural History of Pliny, Volume 4 (of 6)
This fourth volume of the Bohn edition of Pliny the Elder's Natural History, translated by John Bostock and Henry T. Riley, contains Books XVIII to XXIII. The subject is the plant world as the Romans used it: the history and cultivation of grain, the making of bread, legumes and the farming year, flax and the garden plants, flowers and the chaplets woven from them, and long catalogs of the medicinal properties of herbs, fruits and cultivated trees. Pliny, who died at Vesuvius in AD 79, compiled his encyclopedia from hundreds of earlier authors, and the translators' notes point out where he is credulous and where he is shrewd. The result is a storehouse of ancient farming, cooking and medicine. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
