Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences
The Discourse on the Method was published in French in 1637 as the preface to three scientific essays, and it is René Descartes's account, in six short parts, of how he came to his way of thinking. He describes his education and his disappointment with it, the winter day in a stove-heated room when he resolved to doubt everything he had been taught, the four rules he adopted for conducting his reason, the provisional morality he lived by meanwhile, and the arguments that led him to the certainty of his own existence as a thinking thing and from there to God and the world. This edition presents John Veitch's translation. Few books of philosophy are as personal or as readable. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
