Six metaphysical meditations /
Six Metaphysical Meditations is René Descartes's attempt, first published in Latin in 1641, to rebuild knowledge from the ground up. Doubting everything that can be doubted, including the evidence of the senses and the existence of the external world, he finds one certainty in the thinking self, then argues from it to the existence of God and to the real distinction between mind and body. This edition is the translation made by William Molyneux and printed in London in 1680, the first English version of the work, and it also includes the objections raised by Thomas Hobbes together with Descartes's replies, so the reader can watch the argument being tested by a formidable contemporary. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
