The Sailor's Word-Book
An Alphabetical Digest of Nautical Terms, including Some More Especially Military and Scientific, but Useful to Seamen; as well as Archaisms of Early Voyagers, etc.
The Sailor's Word-Book is an alphabetical dictionary of nautical terms compiled by Admiral W. H. Smyth and published in 1867, after his death, with revisions by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Belcher. It covers the whole vocabulary of the wooden navy and the merchant service at the moment steam was replacing sail: the parts of a ship and her rigging, orders and maneuvers, gunnery, navigation and astronomy, weather, fish and sea birds, dockyard practice and the slang of the lower deck, with many military and scientific terms and archaic words from the early voyagers. Smyth writes definitions with opinion and anecdote, so the book can be read as well as consulted, and it remains a standard reference for readers of naval fiction and history. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
