Curious Facts in the History of Insects; Including Spiders and Scorpions.
A Complete Collection of the Legends, Superstitions, Beliefs, and Ominous Signs Connected with Insects; Together with Their Uses in Medicine, Art, and as Food; and a Summary of Their Remarkable Injuries and Appearances.
Frank Cowan compiled Curious Facts in the History of Insects in the Library of Congress during the winter of 1863 and published it in 1865. Arranged by order and family, from beetles and butterflies through bees, ants, flies, fleas, lice, and finally spiders and scorpions, it gathers what the ancients, the Church fathers, medieval chroniclers, travelers and country people have said about each creature: omens drawn from the death-watch beetle, plagues of locusts, bees as emblems of kings, insects tried in ecclesiastical courts, the use of cantharides and cochineal in medicine and dye, and insects eaten as food around the world. It is a commonplace book rather than a work of science, and all the better for browsing. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
