Fossil Plants is A. C. Seward's four-volume survey of paleobotany, published between 1898 and 1919 for students of botany and geology. This second volume, from 1910, deals with the vascular plants that formed the great forests of the Carboniferous and later periods: the giant club mosses Lepidodendron and Sigillaria, the horsetail-like Calamites and their relatives, the Sphenophyllales and the ferns and fernlike plants, with their stems, leaves, roots and reproductive organs described from the fossil record and compared with their living descendants. Seward, professor of botany at Cambridge, writes clearly and with many figures. The classification has been revised since, but the book remains a foundation of the subject.
