Albert Charles Seward (1863–1941) was an English botanist and the leading paleobotanist of his generation. Born in Lancaster, he spent his career at Cambridge, where he was professor of botany from 1906 and master of Downing College, and he served as president of the British Association. His four-volume Fossil Plants, published between 1898 and 1919, was the first comprehensive textbook of the subject in English, and Plant Life Through the Ages brought the story of ancient vegetation to general readers. Seward was knighted in 1936 and spent much of his life on expeditions and collections, describing fossil floras from Greenland to Antarctica.
