Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

by Jules Verne

About 6 h 58 min of reading48 chapters

In 1866 ships begin reporting collisions with an enormous moving reef. Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil and the harpooner Ned Land join an expedition to hunt it and are thrown into the sea, where they are taken aboard the Nautilus, an electric submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo. For ten months they travel the world's oceans, walking on the seabed, visiting the lost city of Atlantis, fighting giant squid and passing under the Antarctic ice, while Nemo's hatred of the surface world slowly reveals itself. Jules Verne published the novel in 1870, and its mixture of cataloged marine life and brooding adventure has made it the most durable of his voyages. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
