From the Earth to the Moon

by Jules Verne

Translated by Ward, Lock & Co.About 3 h 23 min of reading28 chapters

With the Civil War over, the artillerymen of the Baltimore Gun Club have nothing left to shoot at, so their president, Impey Barbicane, proposes firing a projectile at the moon. The novel follows the enterprise from the first calculations to the casting of the Columbiad, a cannon nine hundred feet long sunk into a Florida hill, the arrival of the Frenchman Michel Ardan, who insists on riding inside the shell, and the feud with Barbicane's rival Captain Nicholl. Jules Verne published it in 1865 and took the arithmetic seriously; the launch site, the escape velocity and the splashdown have all been noted by later readers. The sequel, Round the Moon, tells what happened next. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
