Five Weeks in a Balloon
Journeys and Discoveries in Africa by Three Englishmen
Dr. Samuel Fergusson, a British explorer of unshakable calm, proposes to cross Africa from east to west in a hydrogen balloon of his own design, taking with him his friend Dick Kennedy, a Scottish sportsman who thinks the scheme insane, and his servant Joe, who thinks it splendid. Starting from Zanzibar, the Victoria passes over the lakes, the sources of the Nile, Timbuktu and the Sahara, surviving storms, elephants, cannibals and a desperate shortage of water before coming down in Senegal. Jules Verne published it in 1863, his first novel and the beginning of the Extraordinary Voyages. This edition presents the text in William Lackland's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
