The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras, first published in French in the 1860s, is Jules Verne's novel of an expedition to the North Pole. The brig Forward sails from Liverpool under a mysterious captain who reveals himself only once the ship is in the Arctic: John Hatteras, an Englishman obsessed with being the first to reach the pole. With the genial Dr. Clawbonny, a few loyal men and a dog, he pushes north past the traces of the lost Franklin expedition, through mutiny, ice, hunger and cold so intense that the coal runs out. Verne fills the story with geography and science, and this English edition reproduces some two hundred and fifty illustrations by Riou. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
