A Journey into the Interior of the Earth
Jules Verne published Voyage au centre de la Terre in 1864, early in his series of Extraordinary Journeys. Professor Lidenbrock of Hamburg, an irascible mineralogist, deciphers a runic message left by a sixteenth-century Icelandic alchemist and sets off with his reluctant nephew Axel and the imperturbable guide Hans to follow it down the crater of Snaefells. Below they find caverns of giant crystals, an underground sea with a storm and a fight between prehistoric monsters, a forest of mushrooms, and the traces of ancient men, before a volcanic eruption carries them back to the surface in an unexpected place. F. A. Malleson's translation, first published in 1877, is one of the more faithful Victorian versions. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
