The Mysterious Island
In March 1865 five Northern prisoners and a dog escape from besieged Richmond in a balloon and are blown by a hurricane across the Pacific to an uninhabited island. Led by the engineer Cyrus Smith, they make fire, iron, bricks, glass, nitroglycerin and a telegraph from nothing, and through it all some unseen hand keeps intervening to save them. Jules Verne published the novel in 1874 and 1875 as a sequel of sorts to Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, and its final chapters explain the connection. This edition presents Stephen W. White's translation of 1876, which is more complete than the version most English readers know. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
