Around the World in Eighty Days

by Jules Verne

Translated by George Makepeace TowleAbout 4 h 12 min of reading37 chapters

Phileas Fogg, a punctual Englishman of no known profession, wagers half his fortune at the Reform Club that he can circle the globe in eighty days, and leaves London that evening with his newly hired French valet Passepartout. Behind them comes Detective Fix, convinced that Fogg is the gentleman who has just robbed the Bank of England. The route runs by train and steamer through Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco and New York, with an elephant, a rescued widow, a Sioux attack and an ice yacht along the way. Published in 1873, it is Verne's most cheerful book and the one most about timetables. This edition presents the text in George Makepeace Towle's translation, made the same year.
