Off on a Comet, published in 1877 as Hector Servadac, is one of Jules Verne's strangest voyages. A comet grazes the earth off the coast of Algeria and carries away a fragment of it, along with a French captain, his orderly, a Russian count and his yacht crew, a party of Spaniards, a young Italian girl, a British garrison from Gibraltar and an irascible astronomer who alone understands what has happened. As the comet swings out toward Jupiter and the cold deepens, the castaways must learn to live on their new world and plan a return. Verne's astronomy is playful rather than exact, and the book includes a caricature of a Jewish trader that modern readers will find ugly. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
