Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night, written around 1601, is Shakespeare's comedy of the shipwrecked Viola, who disguises herself as a boy named Cesario and enters the service of Duke Orsino of Illyria. Orsino sends her to woo the countess Olivia on his behalf; Olivia falls in love with the messenger; and Viola falls in love with Orsino. Her twin brother Sebastian, believed drowned, arrives to complicate matters further. Below stairs, Sir Toby Belch, Maria and the fool Feste trick the steward Malvolio into believing his mistress loves him. The play ends in marriages, but Malvolio's humiliation and Feste's closing song leave an edge of sadness that has made it one of the most admired of the comedies.
