True Christianity
A Treatise on Sincere Repentence, True Faith, the Holy Walk of the True Christian, Etc.
True Christianity, first published in the early 1600s, is the devotional work of Johann Arndt, a Lutheran pastor and church superintendent who wanted to turn faith from doctrine into lived experience. Arndt calls his readers to sincere repentance, to a living faith that unites the soul with Christ, and to a holy life of love, humility and self-denial, drawing on the medieval mystics as well as on Scripture. The book was reprinted for centuries and prepared the way for German Pietism. This is Anton Wilhelm Böhm's English translation of 1712, revised and supplemented from the German for an American edition of 1868 with a biographical introduction by Charles F. Schaeffer. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
