Tragic Sense Of Life
Tragic Sense of Life, published in Spanish in 1913 and translated by J. E. Crawford Flitch in 1921 with an introductory essay by Salvador de Madariaga, is the central work of Miguel de Unamuno. Its subject is the hunger for personal immortality that reason cannot satisfy and that no honest person can give up. Unamuno sets the man of flesh and bone against the abstractions of philosophy, examines the Catholic solution and the failure of rationalism, and argues that the conflict between the heart's demand and the head's denial is itself the ground of a tragic, passionate faith. The closing chapter takes Don Quixote as the model of that faith. The book made Unamuno known outside Spain.
