Toronto of Old
Collections and recollections illustrative of the early settlement and social life of the capital of Ontario
Henry Scadding, an Anglican clergyman and scholar who grew up in the young town of York, published Toronto of Old in 1873, gathering collections and recollections of the early settlement and social life of the city that became the capital of Ontario. Rather than writing a continuous history, he takes the reader on a walk through the old streets, from Palace Street and the market place along Front Street to the old French fort, then up and down King Street and Queen Street and out to the valley of the Don, pausing at every house, church, school and landmark to recall the people who lived there and the incidents attached to them. It is a classic of Canadian local history. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
