Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore around 1818, never knew his birthday, and barely knew his mother. This account, published in 1845 when he was in his late twenties and already a famous speaker, describes his childhood on a plantation, his years in Baltimore where a mistress began teaching him to read before being told to stop, his brutal time under the slave-breaker Covey, and his resolve to be free. He deliberately leaves out how he escaped, to protect those who might follow. The prose is plain and controlled, and the book's argument is carried by its particulars: the songs, the whippings, the arithmetic of hunger. It was written partly to answer those who said no former slave could have given his speeches. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
