My Bondage and My Freedom
My Bondage and My Freedom, published in 1855, is Frederick Douglass's second autobiography, written ten years after the Narrative and more than three times its length. The first part returns to his childhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, his years in Baltimore, the fight with the slave-breaker Covey and his escape in 1838, now with fuller reflection on what slavery did to enslavers as well as the enslaved. The second part is new: his life in New Bedford, his discovery as a speaker, the tour of Britain and Ireland, his break with William Lloyd Garrison and his founding of his own newspaper in Rochester. The book shows Douglass thinking as a political analyst, not only as a witness. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
