The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African
Written By Himself
The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, published in London in 1789, is one of the earliest autobiographies by a formerly enslaved African. Equiano describes his childhood in what is now Nigeria, his kidnapping as a boy, the horror of the slave ship, and years of enslavement in Virginia, aboard British naval vessels during the Seven Years' War and in the West Indies. He learns to read, trades on his own account, buys his freedom in 1766, and goes on to travel as a sailor, take part in an Arctic expedition and become a leading voice in the British campaign against the slave trade. Written by himself, as the title insists, it went through nine editions in his lifetime. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
