Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson

About 1 h 22 min of reading21 chapters

In February 1676, during the war between the New England colonies and the Wampanoag leader Metacom, known as King Philip, a war party attacked the frontier town of Lancaster, Massachusetts, killed many of its inhabitants and carried off Mary Rowlandson, the minister's wife, with three of her children. Her six-year-old daughter died of her wounds within days. For eleven weeks Rowlandson was moved from camp to camp through the winter woods, trading her sewing for food and reading everything that happened to her through Scripture, until she was ransomed in May. Her account, published in 1682, was the first American captivity narrative and a bestseller in Boston and London. It is a Puritan testimony and, almost against its will, a close observation of Native life in wartime. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
