Plutarch: Lives of the noble Grecians and Romans

About 49 h 21 min of reading68 chapters

Writing under the Roman Empire around the turn of the second century, Plutarch paired the lives of famous Greeks and Romans, Theseus with Romulus, Alcibiades with Coriolanus, Demosthenes with Cicero, and followed many of the pairs with a short comparison. He was less interested in battles than in character, and his anecdotes about Alexander, Caesar, Antony and Cato supplied Shakespeare with plots and generations of readers with their picture of the ancient world. This edition presents the Lives in the seventeenth-century translation published under Dryden's name, as revised and corrected by Arthur Hugh Clough in 1859. At nearly fifty biographies it is a very long book, best read a life at a time. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
