Plutarch's Lives, Volume 2 (of 4)

by Plutarch

Translated by George Long and Aubrey StewartAbout 13 h 04 min of reading31 chapters

This second volume of the Stewart and Long translation of Plutarch's Lives, published by Bohn, contains six pairs of Greek and Roman biographies with Plutarch's comparisons: the Theban Pelopidas and the Roman Marcellus, who fought Hannibal; Aristeides and Marcus Cato the elder; Philopoemen, the last of the Greeks, and Titus Flamininus, who proclaimed Greece free; Pyrrhus of Epirus and Caius Marius; Lysander, the Spartan who ended the Peloponnesian War, and Sulla; and Kimon and Lucullus. The translators aimed at accuracy rather than elegance, and their notes identify persons and places and discuss Plutarch's sources. The volume covers some of the most read of the Lives. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
