Plutarch's Lives, Volume 3 (of 4)
The third volume of the Stewart and Long translation contains ten of Plutarch's lives, paired as he paired them: Nicias with Crassus, two commanders undone by disastrous expeditions to Sicily and Parthia; Sertorius with Eumenes; Agesilaus of Sparta with Pompey; and then, without a surviving comparison, Alexander and Julius Caesar, followed by Phocion and Cato the Younger. The Alexander and Caesar are the most read of all Plutarch's biographies and are given here in full. Aubrey Stewart and George Long made their translation for Bohn's Classical Library in the 1880s, and it is more literal and more carefully annotated than the older Dryden version, with footnotes on sources and names. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
