The Germany and the Agricola of Tacitus
Two short works by the Roman historian Tacitus, both written around AD 98. The Germania describes the tribes beyond the Rhine: their land, weapons, assemblies, marriages, drinking, gods and dislike of cities, and it compares their simplicity, not always to Rome's advantage, with the manners of the empire. It is the only extended ancient account of the early Germans and was read with great attention from the Renaissance onward. The Agricola is a tribute to Tacitus's father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, governor of Britain from 78 to 84, who campaigned as far as the Scottish Highlands; it contains the first substantial description of Britain and the speech in which a Caledonian chief says the Romans make a desert and call it peace.
