Tacitus on Germany

by Tacitus

Translated by Thomas GordonAbout 46 min of reading2 chapters

Tacitus on Germany is the Germania, the short ethnographic treatise the Roman historian wrote about the year 98, describing the land, origins, customs and tribes of the peoples beyond the Rhine. Tacitus treats their warfare, assemblies, kings and chiefs, religion and auguries, marriage, hospitality, feasting and gambling, agriculture and funerals, and then surveys the tribes one by one from the Rhine to the Baltic, often holding up German simplicity and fidelity as a reproach to Roman decadence. The text became a founding document of German self-understanding in later centuries. This edition gives the translation of Thomas Gordon, the Scottish radical whose Tacitus appeared in 1728 and 1731 and was read throughout the eighteenth century, with an introductory note on the author. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
