My Life — Volume 1
My Life is Richard Wagner's autobiography, dictated to his wife Cosima and first printed privately for a handful of friends; it was not published until 1911. This first volume runs from his birth in Leipzig in 1813 to his flight from Dresden in 1849. Wagner recalls a boyhood in the theater, early musical studies, debts and a stormy first marriage, the hard Paris years, and then his time as court conductor in Dresden, where Rienzi, The Flying Dutchman and Tannhäuser were staged and Lohengrin was written. The volume closes with his involvement in the May uprising and his escape to Zurich. Wagner is a vivid, self-justifying and often funny narrator, and the book remains the main source for his early life.
